CODE YELLOW – DELAYED OPENING for Wednesday, February 4

Schools and offices will open two hours late for students and staff.

Childcare programs may operate as scheduled, but families should check with their provider for any updates.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of snow and a messy commute on Wednesday morning, with up to one inch possible on roadways. Combined with overnight refreezing, these conditions could make travel difficult. Out of an abundance of caution and to allow time for families to plan, MCPS is implementing a two-hour delay to support safer travel for students and staff.

A special “Thank You” to the MCPS Division of Transportation Services for getting kids safely to school today!  We had significant challenges today but made it through. More than 50 bus routes were affected by snow and ice, and sections were impassable to school buses. Students on these routes were either unable to go to school or had to seek alternative means of going to school.  We have reported these roads to the County Government so they can attend to improving these roads for later this week.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we get back to school while difficult conditions persist this week.

Code Yellow–Two-Hour Delay means:

  • Schools and offices will open two hours late.
  • Emergency personnel report as directed.
  • Morning bus routes will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • All field trips and activities that begin at 10:30 a.m. or earlier are canceled, including programs at Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
  • Infant and Toddler appointments scheduled before 10 a.m. are canceled; appointments scheduled at 10 a.m. or later will continue as planned.
  • Morning PreK/Head Start and AM PreK Special Education programs are canceled.
  • Morning, all-day and After-school childcare programs may operate as scheduled, families are encouraged to contact their childcare provider
  • Afternoon PreK/Head Start and PM PreK Special Education programs will begin at their regular time.
  • Schools will dismiss at their normal time.
  • Community Use programs occur as scheduled

Bus Route Concerns:
If you have any ongoing concerns about buses reaching your usual stop, please report them or ask questions using the contacts below. Families may also contact the Montgomery County Service Center at 311 or 240-777-0311.

  • Route begins with 1: 240-740-6580 – Bethesda Depot
  • Route begins with 2: 240-740-4720 – Clarksburg Depot
  • Route begins with 3: 240-740-2610 – Randolph Depot
  • Route begins with 4: 240-740-6220 – Shady Grove North Depot
  • Route begins with 5: 240-740-6210 – Shady Grove South Depot
  • Route begins with 6: 240-740-1851 – West Farm Lower Depot
  • Route begins with 7: 240-740-7361 – West Farm Upper Depot

Remember to be safe when travelling:

  • Allow extra time for travel and be patient with buses, walkers, and drivers. Drive slowly, and carefully. Student drivers are encouraged to be especially careful.
  • Watch carefully for ice, narrowed lanes, and blocked sidewalks or curb cuts.
  • Stay out of roadways when walking, if possible. Rely on the safe route that you identified today for tomorrow’s access to school.
  • Look both ways when crossing any street and make sure drivers see you.
  • Use caution when driving near bus stops, crosswalks, and school entrances (as some entrances and exits to roads and facilities may be obstructed by snow/ice piles).

We will update for operations on Thursday on Wednesday by 6 p.m.

As a reminder, while your road may be clear, not everyone’s is.  If your children’s teacher cannot get to school, then the school day is impacted.
