‘A Battle of Whits’: Whitman Alumni Return to Challenge Students and Staff in Special It’s Academic Quiz Bowl Showcase

Walt Whitman High School hosted a special intergenerational “It’s Academic” competition on Oct. 30, bringing together decades of school tradition and intellectual excellence. Billed as “A Battle of Whits,” the event marked a key activity in the Whitman Class of 1970s 55th reunion celebration and highlighted the school’s long legacy of successful quiz bowl teams.

The hourlong competition featured the first-ever ‘Generations’ tournament for the school. Three teams competed for bragging rights: the current Whitman student team, the Whitman Class of 1970s Quiz Bowl team (whose reunion sparked the idea) and a team of Whitman staff members.

Principal Gregory Miller praised the atmosphere and spirit of the academic challenge. “The It’s Academic ‘Generations’ quiz bowl competition really showcased what makes Whitman a special place; its rich tradition, unmatched academic excellence and the remarkable individuals who discover their passions through these experiences,” Miller said.

The competition was moderated by the host of the popular television program, Hillary Howard. It’s Academic is the longest-running quiz show on television, currently in its 65th year.

In the end, it was the current Whitman student team that secured the victory. The winning squad, coached by Mike Negrin, was captained by Jack Pelmoter and featured teammates Grey Sherling and Simon Yohannes.

“Historically, quiz bowl has been a positive platform for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, while coming together as a team for something bigger,” Miller said. “It was inspiring to see our current students enjoy the contest, competing against alumni from the Class of 1970 and their teachers. It was also great to see the students get the win!”

A film crew was on hand to document the contest for an upcoming documentary on the history of It’s Academic, making the event a memorable part of its history.
