BALTIMORE, MD (August 20, 2025) – Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced today that no charges will be filed in connection with the January 31, 2025, shooting involving a special police officer at the Baltimore City Eastside Courthouse. The incident, which occurred early that morning, resulted in the death of Garry Wright Jr., who had reportedly threatened himself with a firearm.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, at approximately 8:40 a.m., Wright entered the courthouse and brandished a handgun, pointing it at his own head. Bailiffs on duty at the entrance ordered him to drop the weapon. In response to the escalating situation, one bailiff drew his service weapon. Wright fired his gun, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. During the altercation, the bailiff discharged his weapon, striking Wright in the leg. Despite immediate medical assistance from courthouse personnel and the arrival of emergency services, Wright was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

The Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) commenced an investigation on the same day as the incident and concluded its findings on August 12, 2025. After thorough examination of the evidence, the IID determined that the special police officer acted within the bounds of the law, leading to the decision not to pursue any criminal charges.
