Montgomery County Police Warn of Unlicensed Contractors and Distraction Theft Scams

Gaithersburg, MD – As warmer weather returns, the Montgomery County Department of Police is reminding homeowners to stay alert and take precautions when approached by individuals offering home improvement or yardwork services—particularly those who go door-to-door.
Each year, MCPD receives reports about criminal transient groups who offer services such as lawn care, driveway paving, or roof repair. While some may appear professional, many are unlicensed, perform substandard work, or leave without completing the job. In some cases, individuals take payment up front and never return.
To reduce the risk of fraud:
- Be cautious of unsolicited offers for services, especially when high-pressure tactics are used to secure payment.
- Avoid paying large sums of money before any work is completed.
- Confirm that a business or contractor is properly licensed before agreeing to any services.
- Do not pay large sums of money in advance.

Residents should also be aware of “distraction thefts” or “distraction burglaries.” These incidents often occur when one or more individuals approach a homeowner outside and engage them in conversation—pretending to offer services or ask questions—while an accomplice enters the home unnoticed to steal valuables.
