Registration Open for Regional ‘Bike to Work Day’ on Thursday, May 15

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, March 26, 2025

Montgomery County residents are encouraged to participate in the regional Bike to Work Day  on Thursday, May 15 and online registration is now open. The event is held annually across the nation to celebrate bicycling as a fun, healthy and climate friendly way to travel. There will be dozens of free pit stop events throughout the region and 14 within Montgomery County. The County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is sponsoring eight pit stops.

The first 18,000 bicyclists to register and participate will get a free t-shirt and will be automatically entered into a raffle for a chance to win a new bike.

“With more people in our region returning to in-office work, Bike to Work Day is a good opportunity to explore a new way to travel,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We are continuing to invest in bike paths and bike lanes across the County, and through Vision Zero , have made upgrades to our infrastructure that prioritize the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.”

Residents biking to work, as well as leisure riders, are encouraged to attend any of the dozens of pit stops throughout the region. Pit stops are free and typically provide refreshments, music and local vendor displays at varying times throughout the morning of May 15. There will be free raffle prizes and a grand prize raffle of a new bike at each of the MCDOT-sponsored pit stops. In addition to the eight pit stops sponsored by MCDOT, there will be six Bike to Work Day pit stops in Montgomery County operated by other organizations.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Commuter Connections , a network of transportation organizations in which MCDOT participates, and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association  are the co-organizers of the region’s Bike to Work Day event.

“Bike to Work Day lets us highlight a greener, healthier alternative to commuting by car,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “Our County has more than 100 miles of bike lanes, with 29 new bike projects currently underway and five under construction. Our Ride On transit system is bike-friendly, with bike racks available on all buses, as well as Capital Bikeshare stations in 77 locations across the County. Residents can visit our sponsored pit stops for information and resources to help make biking part of their daily routine.”

All participants should visit the Find Your Pit Stop Map  to plan a route in advance.

MCDOT-sponsored pit stops will be at the following locations:
