Major Crime Reduction Seen in Downtown Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Friday, March 21, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police- 3rd District Downtown Silver Spring Business District has seen a 7.6% decrease in crime within the past year.

According to statistics from 2023 to 2024, there has been a 68% decrease in carjackings throughout the district, dropping from 19 to 6. Additionally, robbery has fallen by 24% and homicide by 25% since 2023, in the Silver Spring district.

“We’ve worked hard to make this community safer, and the numbers show that we’re making progress,” said 3rd District Commander Jason Cokinos. “But we’re not stopping here. Our officers are out every day, focusing on preventing crime before it happens.”

In addition to increased patrol and community engagement initiatives, the department has focused on proactive policing strategies and crime prevention programs. Notable initiatives over the past year include:

“A big challenge we face is that most of the crime in this area is committed by people who don’t live in Montgomery County,” Cokinos added. “That’s why we’re being proactive, using every tool we have to deter crime and hold offenders accountable. We appreciate the support from our residents and encourage everyone to stay aware and continue reporting suspicious activity. It makes a difference.”

The 3rd District Downtown Silver Spring Business District has seen a noticeable reduction in crime, supported by increased enforcement operations, data-driven policing, and the use of new technology. The Montgomery County Department of Police will continue monitoring crime trends and adjusting its strategies to effectively address evolving challenges.
