MCPS Sends Out Update Concerning Racist Text Messages

Posted on November 7, 2024

On 11/7/2024, MCPS sent the following notice about racist threats sent out some of which were received by students. We have also been made aware of texts seemingly targeting Black Americans in Ohio, Washington D.C., and across the nation. Questions to local officials confirmed that this note is related to similar messages sent across the country.

Here is the note from Montgomery County Public Schools:

Dear Families, Students and Staff,

We are aware that many individuals, including our students, have received text messages today containing racist threats. We condemn these hateful communications and the fear they aim to instill. We have learned that these messages are being received in many communities in our area and across the country.

Local law enforcement and the FBI are aware of these messages, and law enforcement in some areas have announced they consider the messages low-level threats. We recognize that the emotional and psychological impact on our students, staff, and particularly our communities of color is profound. We stand in solidarity with those who feel targeted and hurt by these actions.

To support our students and staff as they process these offensive and distressing messages, school staff—including members of our well-being teams, psychologists, social workers, and counselors—are available across the district. We encourage anyone who needs to reach out for support to do so.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) reaffirms an essential truth at the heart of our community: every student and family is welcome, valued, and respected. Our schools are committed to being safe and inclusive places where bullying, hate speech, and racism have no place.

If you or your child receives one of these messages or has any related concerns, please report it to school staff or local authorities.
