New Window Art Exhibit ‘Soulful Panes’ by Female Black Artists Debuts in Downtown Wheaton in Celebration of Black History and Women’s History Months

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 20, 2024

A new window art installation called “Soulful Panes,” which joins Montgomery County’s celebration of Black and Women’s History months, is now on display in the Wheaton Arts and Entertainment District. “Soulful Panes” was conceived by artist and Wheaton resident Dinah Myers-Schroeder, who was joined by other female artists residing in Montgomery County with the common goal to honor and uplift Black women.

The art exhibit was made possible by in-kind support from the Wheaton Urban District. The artwork is located on the street level of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Wheaton headquarters at 2425 Reedie Drive in Downtown Wheaton. It will be on display through March.

“As we commemorate Black History and Women’s History months, it is important to spotlight the invaluable contributions of Black female artists whose creativity and resilience enrich our diverse cultural landscape,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “The exhibit ‘Soulful Panes’ amplifies the voices of the Black community, offering a powerful platform for these artists to express their experiences. I encourage you to visit this special installation and stay to enjoy everything the Wheaton Arts and Entertainment District offers.”

This project aligns with Ms. Myers-Schroeder’s goal to increase the visibility of artists of color in public spaces, bolster Wheaton’s identity as an arts district and celebrate its diverse community. The artists involved with this project include Stephane Calvin ( Stephanecalvin.art ), Dinah Myers-Schroeder ( AnotherDinahMYTEcreation.com ), Brianna Peppers ( bananapeppersart.com ), Melanie Roster ( Melroyart.net ) and Jennifer Schroeder ( @abstract_jenny ).

Ms. Myers-Schroeder explained that the artists and designers were selected for their diverse artistic voices and perspectives.

“I wanted Black women to be shown in a positive light, focusing on their brilliance, strength and unyielding contribution to every facet of society,” said Ms. Myers-Schroeder. “In a world where diversity is our greatest strength, we honor and applaud the trailblazing Black women who led the path before us and who are shaping our future. Their stories are not only worth telling, but essential for a brighter and more inclusive tomorrow.”
