The Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) Bike Match program has matched more than 1,000 Montgomery County residents with donated bikes, under a program designed to provide more transportation options for residents in need.
MCDOT’s Bike Match MoCo is a year-round County program that provides residents with bikes donated by members of the community. To date, 1,005 residents have received bikes through the program, including 143 children.
“The Bike Match program has provided bikes to over 1,000 Montgomery County residents since the program began in June 2020,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “However, the need is still great. We currently have 450 people on our waiting list who are hoping to receive a bike. If you have an unused bike in good working condition, we hope you will consider donating it to a member of our community.”
Residents who wish to donate or receive a bike can do so by filling out the bike request form on MCDOT’s website. Donated bikes must be in good working condition. Applicants are matched with bikes in the order their request is received.
MCDOT hosted its annual bike donation drive on Friday, Oct 16, in Rockville. One-hundred and twenty-nine bikes were collected during the one-day event.
The bike collection event is in partnership with the Rockville Bike Hub, whose volunteers inspect and refurbish the bikes. The bikes are then distributed to the BikeMatchMoCo program, the Rockville Terrific Kids program, and Bikes for the World. Bikes that are not salvageable are recycled.
This was the eighth year that MCDOT has sponsored the bike drive, starting in 2017. More than 1,800 bikes have been donated through the drive.
