Rockville, MD – In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Margaret Schweitzer sentenced defendant Dominque James Miles, 29, of Waldorf, MD, to eight years in prison, suspending all but 18 months to serve, and five years of supervised probation upon release.
Miles was sentenced on October 16, 2026, immediately after entering a guilty plea to the charge of conspiracy to commit identity fraud to obtain funds over $100,000. Between December 1, 2022, and April 10, 2023, the defendant stole checks out of multiple United States Postal Service (USPS) mailboxes in the Bethesda area. Seven victims have been identified, and the total value of the checks was $195,673.64 in U.S. currency. Miles was not able to successfully cash the checks. However, while executing a search warrant at his home in Prince George’s County, detectives with the Montgomery County Police Financial Crimes Section and the United States Postal Inspection Service recovered $30,000 in cash. As part of the plea agreement, Miles surrendered the cash. Detectives also recovered a USPS “arrow key,” which is a universal master key used by letter carriers to access outdoor collection boxes, cluster box units, apartment panels, and outdoor parcel lockers. It is unclear how Miles came to possess the key.
Assistant State’s Attorney Ian Dombroski prosecuted this case. We are thankful to our law enforcement partners with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Washington D.C. Division, and Montgomery County Police Department, Financial Crimes Section, for their diligent and thorough investigation in this matter.
