Rockville, MD – In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Louis Leibowitz sentenced defendant Michael Aaron Lynn, 40, of Germantown, to 60 years in prison, with all but 25 years suspended, and five years of supervised probation upon release. The sentencing hearing was held on
October 7, 2026. Lynn entered a guilty plea on July 20, 2026, to charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence for the death of 34-year-old Kendall Butler, Jr.
An investigation by the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division Homicide Unit determined that on November 8, 2025, there was a dispute between the defendant and the victim. Later that evening, Lynn was in the area of Germantown Square Urban Park in the 12,200 block of Middlebrook Road. The victim, Kendall Butler, arrived at the park, and at approximately 11:08 p.m., Lynn produced a handgun and shot Butler multiple times. The gun jammed while Lynn was firing. Butler was hit by three bullets. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A responding Canine (K9) Unit police officer located Lynn within several hundred yards of the park, took him into custody, and seized the firearm from his pocket.
Assistant State’s Attorneys John Lalos and Victor Orion handled the prosecution of this matter.
