Today at 12:30 p.m., Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González will hold a briefing to discuss County and state efforts to help protect residents in the midst of the current U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) hiring surge. News reports estimate that ICE plans to hire 5,000 new agents in the coming months to ramp up ongoing enforcement and deportation efforts.
Council President Fani-González will also highlight pedestrian safety infrastructure improvements she has spearheaded in her district. These projects include new traffic signals at Bel Pre Road and Rippling Brook Drive and at Wheaton Woods Elementary School. The new traffic signal at the school is part of the Safe Routes to School Program, which is focused on providing safe and accessible ways for students to walk and bike to school through traffic calming measures, sidewalks, crosswalks, and more.
Additionally, the Council President will highlight the Council’s solid waste disposal alternatives community feedback webpage. The Council is deliberating on how Montgomery County will dispose of and recycle trash for decades to come. Residents are encouraged to learn more about the alternatives under consideration, review the available research and share their views by visiting this newly launched webpage.
The Council president’s briefing is open to the public and will be held in the Potomac River Conference Room located on the sixth floor of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville (directions). The Council president’s briefing will be recorded and posted on the Council’s Facebook (@MontgomeryCountyMdCouncil) and YouTube (@MoCoCouncilMD) pages following the meeting.
