Pedestrian Safety Tips

In 2024, over 71,000 pedestrians were injured and almost 18 percent of all traffic deaths were pedestrians. We can all benefit from keeping Pedestrian Safety Tips in mind to protect ourselves and family members.

For Pedestrians:

• Be Visible: Wear light-colored or reflective clothing and use a flashlight at night. 
• Stay Aware: Put away cell phones and don’t wear headphones to hear approaching vehicles. 
• Use Sidewalks When Available and Walk Facing Traffic to see oncoming vehicles. 
• Use Designated Crosswalks and Obey Traffic Signals: Look left, right, and left again before crossing, and keep looking until you are safely on the other side. 
• Make Eye Contact to acknowledge and ensure the driver sees you. 

For Drivers:

• Be Alert: Always watch for pedestrians, especially at dawn, dusk, or in bad weather. 
• Be Patient: Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stop well before the crosswalk so other drivers can also see the pedestrians. 
• Always Look for and Yield to Pedestrians at crosswalks when you have a green light to turn or if right turns are allowed at red lights as indicated by local traffic laws.
• Be Vigilant While Making Turns and Backing Up: Be extra cautious around cars that are turning or backing up, as pedestrians can be hidden from view. 
• Obey Speed Limits and Stop Signs: Drive within posted speed limits, come to a complete stop at stop signs, and slowdown in school zones, residential, and commercial areas.

• 9/22/26, a male, age 36, was arrested for theft and possession of CDS paraphernalia in the 300 Blk. N. Washington Street.
• 9/23/26, a male, age 43, was arrested for DUI after a single vehicle collision in the Unit Blk. W. Gude Drive.
• 9/24/26, a male, age 15, was arrested for assault, assault on a police officer, trespassing on school grounds, and resisting arrest in the 200 Blk. Richard Montgomery Drive.
• 9/27/26, a male, age 26, was arrested for DUI in the Unit Blk. W. Montgomery Avenue.
• 9/27/26, a male, age 36, was arrested on an outstanding bench warrant and on an outstanding arrest warrant through the Montgomery County Police Department for CDS possession in the 2000 Blk. Veirs Mill Road.

• 2400 Blk. McCormick Road, an unknown subject stole the catalytic converter from a 2005 Toyota Prius between 8:00 p.m. on 9/20/26 and 9:00 a.m. on 9/21/26. Incident reported on 9/22/26.
• 100 Blk. Watkins Pond Boulevard, an unknown male assaulted the victim on a Ride-On bus at approx. 9:30 a.m. on 9/22/26.
• 1000 Blk. Veirs Mill Road, an unknown subject used the victim’s identity to fraudulently open four credit accounts on 9/14/26. Incident reported on 9/23/26.
• 2600 Blk. Tower Oaks Boulevard, an unknown subject stole and deposited multiple checks between 8/5/26 and 8/7/26. Incident reported on 9/23/26.

• 14900 Blk. Shady Grove Road, an unknown subject stole merchandise from a business and assaulted a store employee between 1:56 p.m. on 9/25/26.

• 600 Blk. Elmcroft Boulevard, an unknown subject defrauded the victim of personal funds via a WhatsApp scam between 7/9/26 and 9/17/26. Incident reported on 9/28/26.
