ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 28, 2026—Today, Monday, Sept. 28 at 12:30 p.m., Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González will hold a briefing to provide an update about Council deliberations on the future of Montgomery County’s waste disposal system, discuss affordable housing production and preservation across the Washington metropolitan area, and highlight Montgomery County’s tourism opportunities to help spur economic growth.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Council will continue its ongoing discussions about the future of Montgomery County’s waste disposal system, including the Dickerson Resource Recovery Facility, and assess options for managing trash over the coming decades. Several additional Council meetings will be held this fall to evaluate the environmental, financial and community impacts of each potential approach to this once-in-a-generation decision.

Council President Natali Fani-González will also highlight Office of Legislative Oversight Report 2026-8, Local Affordable Housing Production and Preservation Programs Across the Washington Metropolitan Region, which summarizes programs and policies in the County and across Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments member jurisdictions. Overall, the report found that Montgomery County serves “as a model for some neighboring jurisdictions” but also highlighted the complexity of multiple affordable housing programs with different eligibility requirements. The report offers recommendations for future deliberations on affordable housing targets and housing production.
Additionally, the Council President will discuss Visit Montgomery’s 2026-2032 Destination Strategic Plan. The County currently hosts over nine million visitors annually which generates more than $2.2 billion in consumer spending. The purpose of this plan is to strengthen the visitor economy to enhance economic development and the quality of life for residents through tourism.
The Council president’s briefing is open to the public and will be held in the Potomac River Conference Room located on the sixth floor of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville (directions).
