ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 14, 2026—The Montgomery County Council will hold its sixth annual African Heritage Month commemoration on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 11:30 a.m. The theme of this year’s event will focus on “Building Montgomery County: African Voices Making a Difference.”

“Montgomery County’s African community is an essential part of who we are,” said Council President Natali Fani-González. “Our County is stronger because of the people who have come here from around the world to build lives, businesses and communities. This African Heritage Month, we celebrate the African residents whose leadership, cultures and ideas continue to create opportunities and shape our shared future.”

“As the son of a Nigerian immigrant, I know firsthand that African immigrants and their children are the active builders of our communities,” said Councilmember Will Jawando. “Across Montgomery County and the DMV, they serve as teachers, nurses, engineers, small business owners, and clergy. While the federal government attempts to villainize immigrants and erase the histories that built this nation, we stand firmly in our truth. This legacy of resilience and contribution is my family’s story, it is Montgomery County’s story, and this month, we proudly celebrate it.”

The commemoration will include a Council proclamation and video highlighting community leaders including Juliet Marandure, founder and owner of Blooms by Floribunda; Lahai John, also known as DJ Philo Flexx, an event promoter, DJ, and digital creator; and Ruth Jalloh, Owner of Rhuths African Kitchen.

The commemoration will be held in person at the Montgomery County Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave, Rockville, MD 20850. It will also be streaming live on the Council’s Facebook page, YouTube channel and Council website. Residents also will be able to watch live on television on Comcast/RCN channels 996/1056 Verizon channel 30.
