The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood will waive adoption fees on Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30, as part of NBCUniversal Local’s 2026 “Clear the Shelters” pet adoption campaign. Last year, more than 100 pets found homes during MCASAC’s Clear the Shelters event.

The center, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood, will open at 11 a.m. both days.

MCASAC kicked off August with a Clear the Shelters adoption event that resulted in 54 animals finding new homes. More than 150 animals are currently available for adoption, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks, and chickens.

Interested adopters can learn about the adoption process and view available animals on the MCASAC adoption webpage. The shelter recommends reviewing available animals before arriving and arriving with an idea of the type of pet sought.

During the weekend promotion:

  • Adoptions are completed the same day on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Adopters should be prepared to take their new pet home by bringing a leash and collar for dogs or a pet carrier for cats or small animals.
  • Pets cannot be placed on hold.
  • Adoption fees will be waived.
  • Licensing fees may still apply for dogs and cats.

MCASAC is operated by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services and is the County’s only open-admission municipal shelter. Through adoptions, education, outreach, and other services, MCASAC serves as a community resource, promoting and advocating for responsible pet care. Animal Services officers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to investigate complaints and respond to animal emergencies. Reach them at 240-773-5925 during regular operations or by calling the police non-emergency line at 301-279-8000. You can also call 911 for emergencies.
