Rockville, MD – In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Bradford McCullough sentenced defendant Robert Stojinski, Jr., 43, of Gaithersburg, to 54 years in prison, suspending all but 25 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release. The sentencing hearing was held on Monday, August 10, 2026. On April 16, 2026, Stojinski entered a guilty plea to charges of possession of an explosive material with intent to create a destructive device, manufacturing a destructive device, and two counts of possession of a firearm without a serial number.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and Montgomery County Police responded to the defendant’s residence in the 24000 block of Empress Court in Gaithersburg on October 25, 2025, for the report of an explosion. Investigators determined the explosion involved an improvised explosive device, later identified as a pipe bomb. Stojinski told investigators he placed fireworks inside a metal tube and used an electric initiator before striking the device with a hammer, causing the explosion. He suffered shrapnel injuries to his hand and eye.

During a search of the residence, investigators recovered additional explosive components, including a second device determined to be a live improvised explosive device. They also recovered multiple privately made firearms (PMFs) and firearm components lacking serial numbers, commonly referred to as ghost guns and components of ghost guns.

“In addition to manufacturing explosives and possessing ghost guns, this individual had a history of threatening to do violence. We are thankful that the judge has issued a lengthy prison sentence, during which the defendant will not be able to pose a danger to public safety,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

In addition to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Explosives Investigations Unit, the Montgomery County Police Special Investigative Division (SID), the Firearms Investigations Unit, and Major Offender Unit (MOU) assisted in the investigation along with the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office. We are grateful for their joint efforts in this matter. Assistant State’s Attorney Hannah Gleason prosecuted this case.
