The following is a brief summary of events regarding a shooting inside Wheaton Mall in the 11100 block of Veirs Mill Road.
At approximately 6 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a shooting.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that a 17-year-old male suspect fired a handgun inside the mall, shooting a 13-year-old male victim in the leg.
The suspect ran toward Dick’s Sporting Goods, where an armed security guard apprehended and detained him until officers arrived and took him into custody. Officers recovered the suspect’s handgun.
Officers provided first aid to the victim, who was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
