Gaithersburg, MD – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a fatal police‑involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, July 12, 2026, in Gaithersburg.
The update below is provided by the Montgomery County Department of Police and the Gaithersburg Police Department.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 6:45 p.m., officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police and the Gaithersburg Police Department responded to the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road for a report of a “man loading a gun at [the] bus stop.” Consistent with the caller’s description, officers encountered an adult male armed with what appeared to be a handgun. Shortly thereafter, the individual racked the slide on the handgun.
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation to resolve it peacefully; however, the subject did not respond to those de-escalation efforts. The subject then raised the handgun he was holding in the direction of an officer. In response, officers from both agencies fired their service weapons at the subject. Officers immediately rendered medical aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The subject was pronounced dead at the scene.
A handgun was recovered nearby. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
