On Sunday, March 1, 2026, at approximately 12:09 a.m., officers with the Howard County Police Department (HCPD) responded to 6441 Freetown Road, Columbia, Maryland after Alexander Lamorie had called 911 to report that he was being harassed and blackmailed. When speaking to the officers by phone prior to their arrival, Lamorie made suicidal statements. Upon arrival, officers entered the apartment complex attempting to locate Lamorie. Officers were unable to locate Lamorie inside the complex and upon exiting they encountered Lamorie approaching them from the parking lot with a knife in his hand. Officers issued multiple commands ordering Lamorie to drop the knife. Lamorie failed to comply and continued to approach officers. Officer Cody Bostic, Officer Joel Rodriguez, and Pfc. Joseph Riebau discharged their department issued handguns striking Lamorie. Officers immediately rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived and took over care. Lamorie was pronounced dead on scene. A knife was located near Lamorie. No officers were injured during the incident.

The Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) began investigating the fatal police-involved shooting on Sunday March 1, 2026, and concluded its investigation on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. After completing its investigation and evaluating all the available evidence, the Office of the Attorney General has determined that the subject officers did not commit a crime under Maryland law. Accordingly, the Attorney General has declined to prosecute the subject officers in this case.

A copy of the IID’s detailed investigative findings and analysis of relevant legal issues can be found in its declination report.
