Gaithersburg, MD – Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 3rd District Community Action Team (3DCAT) have arrested 17-year-old Devonte Carlton Jr. from Washington, D.C. and charged him as an adult in connection with a burglary investigation involving a privately made firearm.
On Friday, June 19, 2026, at approximately 8:57 p.m., 3DCAT officers were conducting proactive enforcement in the area of Sligo Avenue and Fenton Street when they were flagged down by a resident. The resident reported that a group of individuals had entered a construction area within an apartment building in the 800 block of Sligo Avenue and that the group was also gambling in a stairwell.
Officers responded to the location and observed the group in the stairwell throwing dice with cash on the ground. As officers approached, one person, later identified as Carlton Jr., attempted to grab a satchel. An officer secured the satchel and immediately recognized the presence of a firearm inside.
Carlton Jr. ran out of the building. Officers chased him through the neighborhood and located him hiding underneath a vehicle in a parking lot in the 700 block of Sligo Avenue, where he was taken into custody.
Upon closer inspection, officers determined the handgun to be a loaded 9mm privately made firearm, also known as a “ghost gun.”
Officers determined that Carlton Jr. is prohibited from possessing firearms because he is under the age of 21.
Carlton Jr. was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was charged as an adult with fourth-degree burglary, obstructing and hindering and firearm-related offenses. He is being held without bond.
